Part I

 1.1 Introduction

Have you ever felt burdened in life? As if things at home, to-do lists and worries in your heart are too many to bear? Make "light life" a mantra: a beautiful phrase to live by and will change your life.

There are lots of books on reducing and organizing things, but this one is different. More than lightening things up, this book will improve the quality of your thoughts and actions at every opportunity and in every aspect of your life you will find a way to commemorate: your belongings, your steps, your stresses and your spirits.

This is a recipe book for minimalist living designed so you can peek into it whenever you need advice and inspiration. More than that, this book is a complete philosophy of life. Whether you're tempted to make an impulsive purchase, try to resist the temptation of a chocolate donut or struggle to resist other obligations, all you have to remember is this one phrase: live lightly.

With this book, Francine Jay makes living minimalism easier and more enjoyable. In just a few minutes a day you will be able to reduce your burdens and lead a more peaceful, simple and stress-free life.

This book is the 2nd in the series from the previous book, The Art of Minimalist Living, which is translated from a book entitled Minimalist Life.

This 320-page book contains about how to start a light life with four things that are explained into four chapters:

Lighten the contents of the house

Lighten the steps

Relieve stress levels

Lighten the soul

At the beginning of reading this book, the author explained how he used the Postponed Item Box for "my child's play". The author is a mother of a toddler or child.

At the beginning of the book, the author invites us to understand that things are non-living things but need to be treated properly; have a place, (try to) not jostle and be beneficial. It's not just sitting there.

1.2 Summary of Each chapter ( Book)

In the chapter Lighten the Contents of the House, the technique of starting a minimalist life is explained, namely starting from scratch, collecting and grouping, curating, boxing out goods, postponing goods boxes, arranging & arranging, perfecting, taking control and holding back.

There is also a section One by One which explains how even how many ideal belongings we have from work clothes, casual clothes, formal wear, socks & underwear, outerwear, shoes, handbags, accessories, plates & bowls, cups & cups, utensils. meals, serving utensils, pots & pans, baking utensils, electronic cooking utensils, other kitchen utensils, "junk" drawers, office stationery, papers, gadgets, digital files, towels, sheets and bedding, books, hobby supplies, items memories, gifts, baby supplies, toys, decorations, and furniture.

In the chapter on Easing Our Steps, we are invited to live our lives by reducing waste, cleaning ourselves and the house lightly, spending less, buying used goods, buying with awareness, borrowing driving lightly and eating lightly. From this I conclude that minimalism is synonymous with a culture of zero waste and 3RA (reduce, recycle, reuse).

In the chapter on Relieving Stress Levels, we are invited to refuse lightly, lighten the schedule, reduce busyness, turn off connections, create a "choreography" of a routine, ease the meaning of success and follow our heart's calling. There is also inspiration about the web of understanding and completing the task quite well.

In the chapter Easing the Soul, we are invited to drink life, feel calm, speak lightly, let go of the ego, walk, flow, be fruitful, stay still and the philosophy of sophrosyne.

From the last two chapters, I can conclude that minimalist life is related to mindfulness (doing things with full awareness).

Part II

2.1 Evaluation/Analysis

I. Art Books Make Life Easier, among others

  • The description of a minimalist's possessions is made in detail, from clothes, hobby clothes, pots and pans, plates and bowls, to accessories.
  • Equipped with views and explanations of values related to light life at the end of each chapter such as value zen (Japan), quantum physics and so on.
  • There is a quote as chapter guard. Not bad for the content inspiring to start reading the chapter.
  • Equipped with tips to do for each sub-chapter in the chapter Relieve Steps, Relieve Stress Levels and Relieve the Spirit.
II. This book will improve the quality of your thoughts and actions at every opportunity and in every aspect of your life you will find ways of commemorating: your things, your steps, your stresses and your spirits.

III. Francine Jay is a minimalist. To her, being a minimalist isn’t only about white walls and empty spaces. It’s about eliminating the distractions that keep us from fully appreciating life. She says: "The less stuff we have cluttering our homes (and the less “to-do’s” cluttering our time), the more energy we can devote to the things that are truly important to us." Her goal is to find that elusive point of “just enough,” whereby she owns nothing more than that which meets her needs. She believes that minimalism isn’t about emptiness for the sake of emptiness --- but rather making room to move freely, think clearly, and open ourselves to the beauty and wonder of life. She is the author of THE JOY OF LESS, A MINIMALIST LIVING GUIDE: HOW TO DECLUTTER, ORGANIZE, AND SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE.

IV. This book is more dry and academic also easy to relate.

Overall impression:

  • In my opinion, as a reader this book is very easy to understand and easy to apply in everyday life.
  • My favorite part is on page 319 :

“Live lightly, so lightly. Take off all the burdens and fly with your new wings ”. (page 319)

Light Life is a philosophy for the world. This philosophy is not a "secret" to success, happiness, or anything else. This philosophy is intended to be disseminated for the good of all. In fact, once we start living lightly, other people may notice our efforts. Friends, family, and coworkers may ask why we cut back on shopping, gossiping or being busy. So, this philosophy is short, uncomplicated and easily communicated to others; requires no wordy explanation. To those who are curious, it is enough for us to convey that we are consuming, eating, talking, working and living lighter - whatever the situation.

The more people who cut back on things, the less debt and pressure we experience to meet other people's living standards. The more people who take their steps lighter, the less trash and pollution will be, and we will have a more beautiful environment. The more people who lower their stress levels, the happier, healthier they are. The more people who make their souls lighter, the more we realize that we are connected to each other and are felt by a sense of mutual love and cooperation.

Living lightly shapes our perspective. The more burdens that are removed, the more we can "expand". It's like being in a hot air balloon. We can soar high, above the problems of everyday life, and see things through new glasses. The lighter we are, the easier life looks like. With new glasses, a view from above, the problems that previously seemed so big and the anxieties that once weighed on us no longer feel significant.

And not only are we on a higher ground, the "lightness" also gives us strength and freedom. Rise up and navigate our own journey. Living Lightly does not mean we are hovering aimlessly, just being blown by the wind, but rather discovering our own abilities and learning to fly.

  • The part I don't like is the "Delete, instead of taking notes, schedule" section because I'm the kind of person who has to keep track of schedules because I often forget.

2.2 Conslusion

  • I would recommend the book because it is really super complete. There are techniques, philosophies and inspiration for living a minimalist life. Recommendations for living a minimalist life. If you forget, just look again. Indeed, a minimalist life can allow us to walk a more peaceful, simple and stress-free life.
  • The kind of readers who will love this book are people who want to change for the better and don't want to enjoy life.
