1.1 Introduction

What do you think when you hear the word mafia? Criminal, right? Yep so, this novel The Godfather tells in detail the life of the mafia in an extraordinary way and is so detailed that it feels real. Because of the details, Mario Puzo as the author of the book is suspected of being the original mafia. Even though in fact he made the book by looking for materials in books in the library. The Godfather itself is not only successful as a novel, but also the film directed by Francis Ford Coppola which is based on this novel is very popular and has received many awards.

1.2 Summary

This novel tells of several mafia families in New York. One of them is the Celeorne family led by Don Vito Corleone who is admittedly very influential. Initially everything was fine until the time when Sallozo from the Tataglia family invited Vito to do business in narcotics but Vito refused because it could cut off his political connections. Because Sallozo did not accept it, then he sent his men to kill Vito, and fortunately Vito was only guessed that it caused serious injury but did not cause him to lose his life. While Vito was treated, Sonny was the first son of Vito to replace him. Instead of advancing or developing, the Corleone family is on the verge of collapse as long as Sonny is in charge. On the other hand, Michael, who is the last child of Vito, is planning the murder he will commit to Sallozo. His mission was successful according to plan and to avoid legal traps he moved to Italy. It didn't stop there, because this also made the Tattaglia family take advantage of the situation by launching its action in the narcotics business with the Corleone family. Vito, who did not want to prolong this matter, withdrew from the mafia world. But on the other hand it turns out that Michael is trying to return to the world of the mafia and plans to re-make the Corleone family as victorious as before.

1.3 Characters

The main character of this novel is Don Vito Corleone who is one of the feared mafia, you could say that the character of Vito himself is very opinionated and wise, it can be seen from his rejection of the business offered by Sallozo which actually will make him get a lot of benefits, not to mention when he does. resignation so that revenge and wars can be under control. Then there is also sonny who is the son of Vito, he is different from his father because of his carelessness, he makes the Corleone family on the verge of collapse. Furthermore, there is Michael who is also the third child of Vito, you could say Michael is a brave and wise child. Then there is Sallozo whose character is arguably not, selfish and careless. This can be seen from the novel's story.

1.4 Settings

The Godfather takes the setting of New York, Las Vegas and Sicily in the '40s, during World War II. The story in this novel revolves around Don Vito Corleone's family, the Godfather, the head of the Corleone family. The Corleone family itself is the largest mafia family in New York, recognized by other mafia families

1.5 Plot

The plot used in this novel is arguably advanced. Because the writer really packaged the story from the beginning, it was structured. From introduction to conflict. The timing is appropriate or gradual and there is no repetition of the story from the past.

1.6 Themes

The theme itself from this novel is action because it has many scenes of mafia wars and even murder. It can be taken for example when Sallozo sent his subordinates to kill Vito, in fact Vito also sent people to follow Sallozo, but in the end he was caught and made a scene that caused Vito's subordinate to die.

Part II

2.1 Evaluation

The plotting in this novel is excellent. The story is propulsive. This is the kind of book that needs to be taken on a long plane trip, because it really passes the time. But this novel may be read by a child younger than 18 years because it has several scenes story that may well never be read by children under the age of 18.

2.2 Conclusion

This novel It has rich and in interesting characters, clever back stories, and iconic one liners. Its slow calm way of talking about the rough and fast paced world of the mafia was refreshing. If you like action, need some clarification on the movies, or want a fresh (old school) take on a classic gang story you should try this book. Also if you have the option you should listen to it as an audio book the reading for it is wonderful. While its clear the Puzo has never actually talked to a woman and has no idea how to write one it comes off as funny and doesn't hurt the plot that much
