 Early Marriage is Harmful

   Early marriage has been decreasing in a number of countries around the world. However, the phenomenon of early marriage still seems to be a trend and lifestyle among young people today, especially those who live in rural areas. Most Early Marriages are considered to be forced which is true but children entering into an Early Marriage out of choice should also be warned of various personal and health issues that can complicate their lives forever.

 Beside of financial circumstance, adolescent or even children choose married in young age because they had been dated for along time and they want to avoid having a baby before marriage. In most cases,  many parents in metropolis want their children to get married as soon as possible due to the child itself has big responsibility to continue their parent position in a company before their parent die, it means that inherit money and receive benefits available to children. Early marriage make adolescent become more mature in mentally to control their emotion and learn how to manage household finance. Although marriage is a huge decision to make, it doesn’t require the perfect time. Early marriage can be a great path for both partners who have a unique chance to grow from youth into adulthood side by side. On the other hand,  people in Indonesia still lacked of education about early marriage. The factions in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) approved the Government’s proposal to increase the minimum age for marriage to 19 years-old. Before they changed the law, the minimum age limit for women to marry is 16 years and the revision is contained in Law No.  1  of 1974  established a marriage age limit of 16 years for women and 19 years for men. For this reason, the government, through  Marriage  Law  No.  16  of  2019,  has  changed  the marriage age limit of 19 years for women and men since 15 October 2019.

 Marrying early may seem very romantic and convenient, but it has its problems. Couples need to get to know each other better. Rushing into a marriage, which may not last long is not the right thing to do. Sometimes, young couple didn’t think the high risk of early marriage if suddenly there is a quarrel between them in the future. Therefore, they should make some plans before married, whether it is from a mental, financial perspective, and have to broaden the insight about early marriage. According news by detikcom, there are 1.201 widows in Mojokerto in the middle 2019. Junior Registrar of Religious Courts of Law Supardi said, between January-August 2019 there were 90 cases child marriage. Meanwhile in 2018, the total number of marriage in underage stands at 117 cases. Ironically, most of them marriage in underage because the girls had pregnant before they were married, so their parents decided to make a wedding ceremony for their children at an early age. Furthermore, another trigger is due to many parents are concern about their children violating religious norms and morals. Early marriage showed that divorce rates are relatively high among underage married couples. So that, the government revise the law about marriage that age limit for married for women and men is 19 years old.

   In the medical world, the risks of early pregnancy and child birth are make increased risk of dying, increased risk of premature labor, complications during delivery, low birth-weight, and a higher chance that the newborn will not survive. Pregnancy related deaths are the leading cause of mortality for 15-19 year-old girls (married and unmarried) worldwide. Mothers in this age group face a 20 to 200 per cent greater chance of dying in pregnancy than women aged 20 to 24. Those under age 15 are five times as likely to die as women in their twenties. The main causes are haemorrhage, sepsis, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia and obstructed labor. Unsafe abortion is the other major risk for teenage women most of those affected are unmarried. Meanwhile, early marriage will inflict problem mental health to women during they are pregnant. Especially, when they had experienced baby blues syndrome that would make them suddenly sad easily, sensitive, and pressure. The worst part, if young mother can’t control their emotion it will make depression and ignored her baby at the same time. 

   Marriage is an individual choice. If you decided to marry, make sure your age in 19 years which appropriate as marriage law in Indonesia. In addition, you should prepare yourself such as educate yourself first (for example, you can learn how to develop parenting skill or how to raise children became successful in various aspect), make sure you are mature enough in mentally because it’s important to control emotion in any situation, and fulfill your day with positive activities to avoid you from juvenile delinquency which is one of factors the increased of early marriage in Indonesia.
