Online Learning : A Non-Effective Solution For Student’s Character Education
Online learning began in March 2020. This is an effective alternative method for the running of the education system in Indonesia during the Covid-19 pandemic. Online learning is defined as an online-based innovative learning with digital or other forms of material. The main objective is to provide students with a learning experience that supports the learning process that is personal, open, fun, and interactive. Some people said that online learning supports student academic education. However, it does not fully guarantee the student’s character education. Online learning is a non non-effective solution for student’s character education, because when this educationl activities are carried out online, the teachers cannot supervise their student directly. No one can guarantee that students receive character education which is should appropriate with the values taught by educational institution.
First of all, with online learning the essence of learning itself is still lacking. When theres only meeting face to face via a laptop screen, students do not get an emotional approach from the teachers. It is just take and give the materials and assignments. This does not maximize the potential of each student due to the limited time for online meetings and the common online learning problem such as the unstable internet network.So, there is no time for more intense interaction between teachers and students, especially in paying attention to the character and attitude problems of each student.
Online learning that can be done anywhere can lead to undisciplined students. For example, those who should go to college with neat clothes after bathing, this is not necessary when attending online lectures, which is a form of discipline in the morning. It is not uncommon for students to neglect class because they feel they are not being directly monitored when an online class is taking place, for example when students are learning via Google Meet, students will close the camera and audio of their laptop or smartphones. students are busy with their own activities instead of listening to the teacher. this proves that the sense of respect of students goes down completely in online learning. Hill (2002) said: “Character determines someone’s private thoughts and someone’s actions done. Good character is the inward motivation to do what is right, according to the highest standard of behaviour, in every situation”. Character education teaches habitual ways of thinking and behaviors that help individuals to live and work together as a family, community, and state.
In conclution, it is not effective to apply character education into online learning. Online learning just focused on academic knowledge due to its limited time and many struggles when the online class begin. Character education is important, so we must build it as long as possible although with online learning, which is not give too much character education.
