Traditional Dance in Sukabumi: Tari Jipeng
Sukabumi is a city that has extraordinary character with a calm, beautiful and comfortable atmosphere, which makes many people like and settle in the city of Sukabumi. Sukabumi comes from the Sundanese language, Suka-Bumen, according to information considering the air is cool and comfortable, those who come to this area do not want to move anymore because they like or have the meaning of being happy, and Bumen which means a place to live. So when put together from Suka-Bumen it can mean happy to live in.
Freedom in the era of globalization has now made foreign arts and culture easily enter society. This has resulted in reduced public interest in arts and culture itself. External arts that have high flexibility can easily keep up with the times, which makes standardized traditional arts very difficult to compete.
Various arts in Sukabumi are always accepted and enjoyed by the people. Sukabumi has a variety of arts that were born from the work of the supporting communities, the types of art that grow and develop in the Sukabumi area, one of which is Jipeng. Art in the city of Sukabumi can grow and develop with the willingness and effort of the existing artists and creators in the workshops as an effort to add and preserve the existing arts in the city of Sukabumi.
Jipeng is one of the traditional arts in West Java province which was created by taking three elements of art, namely tanji / tajidor, tilu / kliningan tapes and masks (Sundanese plays). Jiepeng art was formed in 1923, these arts are often part of the activity process carried out in huma and the tenth's rice fields. Besides functioning as entertainment, jipeng also has a ritual function. The sound of tanji music can take care of the animals that disturb people when they do activities in the fields.
Usually the duration of tanji performances starts at 20.00 - 24.00 WIB. The audience was also treated to tanji music without songs and dances. Impressed very monotonous and the duration is long enough to cause boredom in the audience. The factor finally made the artists in the Ciptagelar group add the art of tilu / kliningan tapes and Sundanese Sandiwara (masks). Since then, the three arts that are often staged in traditional events held at Kasepuhan Ciptagelar have been collaborated and named Jipeng. Jipeng shows are usually performed on stage or in open spaces. The tanji in the structure of the jipeng performance serves as an instrument and can also be used to accompany male singers.
The art of jipeng also takes place in the jaipong dance, usually this art attracts the audience more because of the songs and dances that inspire the audience. Jaipong, which is performed in the art of jipeng, creates a jaipong figure accompanied by tajidor music. This art collaboration resulted in a new art form called the jipeng dance. Currently the jipeng dance has become a cultural icon of the Sukabumi district and has started to be performed a lot both in individual and local dance performances.
Currently, the art of jipeng can be said to still survive because it has become part of a tradition that must be carried out among the community, especially in the South Banten area.Seeing the importance of preserving indigenous culture in the city of Sukabumi, we as the young generation must be able to preserve art responsibly. By enriching and preserving existing arts. Therefore, we, the younger generation, must be able to take responsibility for the existing culture so that it can still be developed.
