The Existence of Catrik Palagan Art Community in Sukabumi
Have you ever know about Catrik Palagan Art Community which located in Sukabumi? Perhaps, the name it’s sounds strange when the first time you read it or heard information orally from people. Catrik Palagan Art Community was founded in Health Department, Sukabumi on 1999 by Ki Domon, but moved on Kenari street, Cikole, Sukabumi. This community developed the gentle classical dance combine with Jaipongan or create and modified new dance concept. This idea has a purpose to prevent traditional dance look monotone as time goes by. Majority, people who join this community are consist children and teenager. There are several reasons why Catrik Palagan Art Community still exist until right now, because of the community has creativity and consistent ambition to preserve local art in Sukabumi.
This community has their own creativity. Wangsa Suta dance created by Toto Sugiarto on 2011 which get high attention by people. He explained that the idea inspired from a story represented from a dance drama performance with title “Drama Tari Pudak Arum”. The drama is tell about a young man named Wangsa Suta who try to open Tegalan Parang Month in Sukabumi because he want married to Nyi Pudak Arum as a require. However, he should defeat an executioner delegate from Demang Kartala because Nyi Pudak Arum is kidnapped by him. From that story an amazing idea suddenly came to Toto Sugiarto’s head. The movement is powerful impulse because based on Wangsa Suta character. There’e also has another characteristic in choreography itself based on the classical Sudanese dance movement mixed with Pencak Silat and new dance movement creation. Coincidentally, Toto Sugiarto has opportunity to join creativity dance competition in West Java provincial degree, and got 1st rank. In addition, Wangsa Suta has moral lesson in education.
The founder—Ki Domo has a personal ambition as an artist who want to developing traditional dance art and feels responsible for the preservation of culture and create something new and hold appreciation to adolescents. He explained that the reason why he made this community because many teenager nowadays forgot their identity especially in traditional dance art in Sukabumi city. He try hard to introduce traditional dance by teach adolescents to practice traditional dance and joining some competition. Ki Domo also said that he want to develop Sundanese culture not for business.
The impact that felt after this community growth well in Sukabumi. For example when his student got the certificate, it can be used as alternative require for registered to the next step. In addition, support and parent’s affection is important to children even though the cost to join this community is not too expensive. Furthermore, if many young generation could share their talent, no doubt traditional local art in Sukabumi would be more popular and make people didn't forget to their own identity.
We can learn from Ki Domo as long as we have strong ambition and always work hard the process won’t betrayed the result. So, don’t be underestimate to some local art community because of them, the cultural traditional local art still can existed until right now.
