 Wayang Sukuraga in Sukabumi

Many people did not know that Sukabumi has its own Wayang called Wayang Sukuraga. Wayang Sukuraga is one of traditional arts in Sukabumi that combines fine art, puppets theater and literature. This traditional art has received the government recognition since 2016 and has appeared at many event in foreign countries, but ironically there are still many Sukabumi people who do not know about Wayang Sukuraga. Lack of information and aphatetic people made Wayang Sukuraga unrecognized by most of people in Sukabumi. Wayang Sukuraga should have better known by the public especially in Sukabumi, because this is a unique and valuable cultural asset that should be preserve and protect.

Wayang Sukuraga was created by an artist named Fendi Sukuraga and has initially been performed to the public since 1997. Stories that are delivered in wayang sukuraga performances is different from the other wayang in Indonesia which is generally adopted from Ramayana and Mahabrata stories, stories in Wayang Sukuraga performance refers to human conflict in daily life and social life.

‘Suku’ means member and ‘Raga’ means body, so the names of the characters of  Wayang Sukuraga are taken from part of bodies and shaped like bodies itself, such as, mouth, eye, ear, nose, hand, foot. Each character describes human roles and habits in life which is described by the part of human body itself like a conversation between characters, right hands talk to mouth, feet talk to eyes, and others. The characters in this puppet script are always be ourselves who show what we always do in our life. In other word, Wayang Sukuraga wants to share the understanding on how the human part of bodies fight and handle their desires.

Although this puppets has appeared in overseas such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, Wayang Sukuraga is not gained a big popularity in its own cities. But it does not mean the whole society in Sukabumi do not know about this traditional arts, it is just lack of attention from the people in Sukabumi. Therefore Wayang Sukuraga needs to be encouraged and supported by the community environment for preserving this traditional art and make it known by public as one of assets that belong to Sukabumi.

Wayang Sukuraga is not just a traditional art, it is a pride, identity, and valueable cultural assets of Sukabumi. How it can be maintained and known by people it return to ourselves, in conclution we should appreciate and pay more attention to this traditional arts so that it can be introduced to our next generation.
